Sahara Group Foundation has expanded its waste recycling initiative to Northern Nigeria with the inauguration of two new Sahara Go Recycling Hubs in Jigawa and Kaduna states, a move aimed at promoting sustainable waste management while creating economic opportunities for local communities.
The newly commissioned facilities, located at Gidan Hakimi in Shuwarin Local Government Area of Jigawa State and Asharami Retail Station, Badiko, Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State, are the Foundation’s 21st and 22nd recycling hubs nationwide. They also represent its second and third hubs in Northern Nigeria. The facilities were inaugurated on July 14 and 15, 2026, respectively.
The Jigawa hub was established by Sahara Group Foundation in partnership with the King’s Council, Shuwarin, while the Kaduna facility was delivered in collaboration with Sahara Group’s sister company, Asharami Synergy.
According to the Foundation, the Sahara Go Recycling initiative is designed to convert waste into economic value by enabling households to earn income from recyclable materials, while supporting cleaner and healthier communities. The programme aligns with Sahara Group’s Beyond XXX sustainability vision of delivering long-term, community-driven impact across Nigeria.

Speaking on the expansion, Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, said the organisation remains committed to promoting practical and scalable sustainability solutions through strategic partnerships.
She noted that working with local institutions and sister companies has made it possible to develop recycling systems that communities can take ownership of and sustain over the long term.

The commissioning ceremonies attracted government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders and residents. Dignitaries at the Jigawa event included members of the King’s Council, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nura I. Doka, Chairman of Shuwarin Local Government Area, Hon. Abdulhamid Ibrahim Balago, his deputy, as well as community chiefs and residents.
Speaking during the inauguration, Alhaji Bashir Abdullahi, Sarkin Gabas and Hakimin Shuwarin, described the project as a timely intervention that addresses the community’s long-standing waste disposal challenges.
“For years, our people have had no organised way to deal with waste beyond burning or dumping it by the roadside,” he said. “This hub gives our young people and our women a way to earn from something that used to just pollute our surroundings.”
At the Kaduna event, the Filling Station Manager of Asharami Retail Station, Badiko, Aliyu Abdullahi Mabai, said hosting the recycling hub aligns with Asharami Synergy’s commitment to responsible business practices and environmental sustainability.
“We are glad to host this recycling hub on our premises,” he said. “It gives our customers and neighbours a simple way to recycle, and fits with what Asharami Synergy stands for as a responsible business.”
The Foundation also announced plans to establish another Sahara Go Recycling Hub in Kano State in the coming weeks. The proposed expansion follows recent engagements with the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who expressed support for the initiative.
Since its launch, the Sahara Go Recycling programme has facilitated the recycling of more than 1,000 tonnes of waste materials and created direct and indirect economic opportunities for over 2,000 people across Nigeria, further reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and inclusive community development.
