The Nasarawa State Police Command has launched a full-scale rescue operation after gunmen stormed an off-campus student lodge in Gudi, Akwanga Local Government Area, abducting six university students and one visitor late Tuesday night.
The attack occurred around 9:00 p.m. on May 6, when armed hoodlums broke into a lodge at Anguwar Ninzo, on the outskirts of Gudi town. The six confirmed victims are students of the Faculty of Engineering at the Gudi Campus of Nasarawa State University, Keffi. A seventh person, identified as a visitor to the lodge at the time, was also taken.
State Police Public Relations Officer SP Rahman Nansel confirmed the incident in an official statement issued Thursday in Lafia, adding that the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Mohammed, personally visited the scene to assess the situation and reaffirm the command’s commitment to rescuing the victims safely.
In a swift operational response, the Area Commander in Akwanga has been redeployed to lead field coordination of the rescue effort. A joint security team — comprising the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), the military, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and local vigilante groups — has since been deployed to track down the abductors.
“The operation is aimed at tracking down the abductors, rescuing the victims unhurt, and bringing the perpetrators to justice,” Nansel stated.
Authorities have urged residents, students, and the wider university community to remain calm and security-conscious, while calling on anyone with useful information to contact the nearest police station or security agency without delay. Further updates are expected as the operation progresses.
