The All Progressives Congress in Sokoto State has directed its aspirants, candidates and campaign organisations to stop pasting political posters on roundabouts, monuments and other public infrastructure across the state.
The directive followed concerns that newly constructed and beautified public facilities within Sokoto metropolis and surrounding areas were being defaced by campaign materials.
The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mohammed Umar, disclosed the decision in a statement issued on behalf of the state leadership.
Speaking through the statement, the Sokoto APC Chairman, Haruna S. G. Adiya, described the indiscriminate display of posters on public infrastructure as irresponsible, unacceptable and inconsistent with the party’s commitment to environmental cleanliness and orderly urban development.
Adiya said the state government had committed significant public resources to constructing and beautifying roundabouts and other facilities, but those efforts were being undermined by political actors who continued to paste posters on them.
“The government has invested significant resources in beautifying public spaces, but those efforts are being undermined by political actors who continue to paste campaign posters on these facilities,” he said.
He maintained that candidates and their supporters had no justification for damaging facilities built with public funds in the name of political campaigns.
“It is therefore unacceptable for any candidate or supporter to deface these facilities with campaign posters. Such actions constitute environmental abuse, visual pollution and a clear disregard for public infrastructure,” the chairman added.
Adiya said political campaigns must be conducted lawfully and with respect for public property, warning that the party would not tolerate activities capable of damaging its reputation or frustrating the government’s efforts to improve the environment.
He consequently directed all APC aspirants, candidates and campaign organisations to remove posters already pasted on roundabouts and other public monuments.
The chairman also warned them against displaying new campaign materials on prohibited public infrastructure.
According to him, any aspirant, candidate or campaign organisation that disregards the directive will face disciplinary action under the party’s constitution and internal regulations.
“Any candidate or campaign team that fails to comply with this directive will face disciplinary action in line with the party’s constitution and internal regulations,” Adiya said.
“We will not hesitate to impose appropriate sanctions on anyone who disregards this order because no one is above party discipline, and the APC remains committed to promoting responsible political engagement.”
The party chairman also appealed to APC members, supporters and residents to assist in protecting public infrastructure by reporting incidents of poster vandalism and other forms of environmental abuse.
He said reports could be submitted to the appropriate government authorities or the party’s disciplinary committee for necessary action.
