The House of Representatives says the proposed State Police bill is at an advanced stage.

It is confident President Bola Tinubu will grant swift assent once passed by the National Assembly and two thirds of State Houses of Assembly.

Chairman of the Special Ad-hoc Committee on Constitution Review and Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, gave the assurance during deliberations on the executive bill to establish State Police.

The bill is part of the ongoing Sixth Alteration of the 1999 Constitution.

The committee says it is undertaking a clause by clause consideration of the bill to ensure it reflects the aspirations of Nigerians.

The proposal is one of Mr. President’s key constitutional reform initiatives aimed at strengthening national security.

Mr. Kalu said the Senate has already considered and adopted the executive bill with amendments.

He added that the House committee will adopt the Senate’s report as its working document to fast-track harmonisation before final legislative action.
