The Super Eagles of Nigeria have maintained their 26th position in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings but have dropped to fourth place among African nations following the release of the updated standings on Monday.
The Super Eagles’ ranking remained unchanged after their last outing, a 2-1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly in June. With no competitive fixtures since then, the result had little impact on Nigeria’s position in the global rankings.
Despite retaining their place in the world standings, Nigeria were overtaken on the African rankings by Egypt, whose impressive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup earned them a rise on the continent. The Pharaohs advanced to the Round of 16 before bowing out after a narrow 3-2 loss to eventual runners-up Argentina.

Morocco continue to lead the way as Africa’s highest-ranked side after their quarter-final finish at the World Cup. The Atlas Lions also improved their global standing, moving up one place from seventh to sixth in the world.
Senegal remain second-best in Africa despite slipping three places in the global rankings, while Algeria occupy fifth place on the continent after dropping one spot worldwide.
Globally, Spain reclaimed the number one ranking following their triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The new world champions replaced Argentina at the summit after defeating the South Americans in the final.
Argentina now sit second, while France, England and Brazil complete the top five teams in the world.
FIFA is expected to publish its next men’s world rankings on October 7, 2026.
