Tension gripped parts of Odogbolu Local Government Area on Thursday following the arrest of two suspected herders found in possession of a large sum of money, sparking controversy and divided opinions among residents.
The individuals, identified by locals as Fulani herders, were reportedly apprehended by security operatives in the Atiba area of the council. Viral videos and images circulating on social media showed the suspects surrounded by security personnel, with claims that they were carrying a substantial amount of cash at the time of arrest.
However, as of press time, the Ogun State Police Command had yet to officially confirm the incident, disclose the amount recovered, or state the exact circumstances that led to the arrest.
The development has triggered mixed reactions, particularly against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in the state. While some residents called for increased vigilance and thorough investigation, others warned against ethnic profiling and premature conclusions.
The incident comes weeks after the controversial arrest of a Fulani leader, popularly known as Seriki Fulani, and his son in May 2026 over alleged links to kidnapping activities in the state, further fuelling suspicion and anxiety among communities.
Security experts say the circulation of unverified information on social media could worsen tensions if not properly managed, urging authorities to provide clarity to prevent misinformation.
Efforts to get official comments from police authorities were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
Residents have, however, called on security agencies to carry out a transparent investigation to determine the source of the money and establish whether any criminal activity was involved.
