A tragic incident has claimed the life of a 45-year-old man, Yusuf Usman, who fell into an abandoned well while attempting to recover his mobile phone in Kwa Town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has thrown the community into mourning as residents grapple with yet another avoidable death linked to unsafe open wells.
Confirming the development, the Kano State Fire Service said it received a distress call at about 11:13 a.m. and immediately deployed its emergency response team to the scene.
According to the spokesperson of the service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, firefighters arrived to find the victim trapped inside a disused well that had reportedly been converted into a refuse pit.
He explained that rescue operatives were able to recover the man alive but unconscious.
“Our team successfully rescued him from the well, but he was unconscious at the time. He was later confirmed dead, likely due to oxygen depletion and excessive heat within the pit,” Abdullahi said.
The body of the deceased was subsequently handed over to the Ward Head of Kwa Town, Alhaji Muktar, for burial arrangements in line with Islamic rites.
The Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and used the opportunity to warn residents against leaving wells uncovered or abandoning them without proper closure.
He urged community leaders and parents to take responsibility for environmental safety, stressing that many similar tragedies are preventable if basic precautions are observed.
Authorities say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing, even as calls mount for stricter safety measures around disused wells and pits across communities in the state.
