Nollywood actor Godwin Nnadiekwe has raised concerns over safety in the Nigerian film industry after alleging that he narrowly avoided being used for ritual purposes through a handshake with a fellow actor.
The actor disclosed the disturbing claim in a post shared on his Instagram Story on Wednesday, where he spoke about what he described as a lesser-known and troubling side of Nollywood.
According to Nnadiekwe, the alleged attempt was unsuccessful because of what he attributed to his strong spiritual foundation.
Reflecting on the incident, the actor said it had made him more conscious of the need for safety, vigilance and accountability among industry professionals.
Nnadiekwe also expressed doubts about the level of protection available to actors through industry guilds. He consequently advised his colleagues to be mindful of the people they associate with and those they collaborate with professionally.
He urged actors and other creatives to guard their personal space, carefully consider the company they keep and remain vigilant while carrying out their professional responsibilities.
Beyond his personal experience, Nnadiekwe called for more conversations about ethical behaviour, responsibility and accountability within Nollywood.
He stressed that everyone working in the Nigerian film industry deserves to operate in an environment where their safety and wellbeing are taken seriously.
