Nollywood actress and media entrepreneur Mary Njoku has spoken out about what she describes as society’s failure to properly recognise the efforts and sacrifices of women.
The actress shared her thoughts on Instagram after having a conversation with a male colleague who opened up to her about the pressures he faces.
According to Mary, the man complained about the responsibility of providing for others, making money, building a successful business and meeting the needs of people who depend on him.
Mary said she told him that she understood what he was going through. However, he disagreed, insisting that she could not truly understand his struggles because she is a woman and does not experience the same societal expectations placed on men.
Reacting to the conversation, the wife of IrokoTV boss Jason Njoku reflected on how society has traditionally praised men for being providers while often overlooking the contributions women make.
She pointed out that many women’s sacrifices are treated as normal expectations rather than achievements worthy of recognition. She also noted that women can work hard and contribute significantly, yet their efforts are sometimes attributed to the men around them.
Mary further highlighted how women are often expected to shoulder major responsibilities without seeking recognition or making noise about their struggles.
Celebrating women for their resilience, the actress stressed that they have carried significant burdens and made countless sacrifices that many people may never fully acknowledge.

“A few years ago, I was talking to a colleague I’d hired for a project.
He was telling me about the pressure of having to provide, make money, build a business, and carry the burden of people depending on him.
I told him, “I understand “,
He said, “No, you don’t. You can’t possibly understand. You are a woman. Women don’t understand that kind of pressure.
I smiled and said, “Of course, how can I?
I signed his cheque, handed it to him, and wished him well.
Didn’t argue.
Reality doesn’t need defending. Sometimes, your life speaks louder than your words.
For generations, countless African women have carried the weight of entire families long before they ever had husbands or children.
They helped raise siblings, paid school fees, supported parents, cared for relatives, and carried responsibilities that were never meant for one person alone. Some are still doing it today, even after getting married and starting families of their own.
Yet, they rarely get credit for it.
Sometimes, their sacrifices are overlooked. Sometimes, their achievements are credited to the nearest man in the room. Sometimes, they’re expected to carry the load so quietly that people forget they were carrying it at all.
Society has long celebrated men as providers, while treating many women’s contributions as expected, invisible, or secondary.
