Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved a strategic initiative aimed at expanding the country’s clean energy transport by integrating electric vehicles into the already existing Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), news.ng reports.
According to a close source, the initiative will now operate under a new name — Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV).
This programme is expected to serve as a coordinating agency monitoring the country’s clean energy mobility, supervising both gas-powered and electric vehicle usage nationwide.
Under this mandate, the PiCNG & EV will inaugurate key compressed natural gas facilities, including the establishment of Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Stations, the distribution of CNG-powered vehicles, conversion programmes, and maintenance equipment.
According to the source, “Under the expanded mandate, PiCNG & EV will continue deployment of CNG infrastructure, including Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Units, CNG vehicles, conversion programmes, and related equipment. At the same time, it will spearhead the development and rollout of electric vehicles, EV charging infrastructure, and associated investments nationwide.
“President Tinubu has directed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to immediately establish a coordinated framework for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits across Nigeria, ensuring they remain affordable and accessible to ordinary citizens.
“To achieve this, the initiative will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions, and other partners to develop innovative, cost-effective financing models that make conversions widely available to the public.”
