Tinubu hails Tunji Bello at 65, commends his legacy in public service

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, Mr. Tunji Bello, on the occasion of his 65th birthday.

Tinubu, in a personally signed tribute issued on Tuesday to commemorate Bello’s birthday, described the FCCPC boss as a dependable ally, accomplished administrator and unwavering advocate of progressive ideals.

The President lauded his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, journalism and public service, noting that their relationship spans more than three decades of shared commitment to the progressive movement and the struggle for democratic governance.

Tinubu said the former journalist distinguished himself as a courageous media professional during the era of military rule before transitioning into public service, where he consistently demonstrated competence, integrity and excellence.

According to the President, Bello’s career trajectory, from serving as editor of leading national newspapers to holding key positions in the Lagos State Government and later leading the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, reflects an exceptional blend of professionalism, creativity and strong character.

Tinubu recalled appointing Bello into the Lagos State Executive Council in 2003 to tackle the state’s waste management challenges, despite his successful journalism career at the time.

He said Bello delivered remarkable reforms within a short period, earning the confidence of successive administrations that retained him as Commissioner for the Environment and later as Secretary to the State Government.

The President described Bello as a versatile public servant whose expertise cuts across political science, law, public administration and strategic communication, adding that he remains one of the most accomplished government officials of his generation in Lagos State.

Reflecting on his decision to appoint Bello to head the FCCPC, Tinubu said he considered him the most suitable person to reposition consumer protection and competition regulation in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He expressed satisfaction with Bello’s performance at the Commission, noting that the FCCPC boss has made significant strides within two years of assuming office by strengthening consumer protection and promoting fairness in Nigeria’s marketplace.

Tinubu thanked Bello for his years of dedicated service to the nation and the progressive movement, praying that Almighty Allah would grant him many more years in good health, renewed strength and greater opportunities to continue serving Nigeria.
