Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has said that the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has failed in key areas, particularly in security and electricity. He stated that the president cannot guarantee Nigerians’ security, a constitutional duty sworn under oath—to protect the lives of citizens, news.ng reports.
According to the former Nollywood actor, now a lawyer and politician, the situation currently facing Nigerians is a failure of the Tinubu administration.
Highlighting how insecurity has gone from bad to worse, Okonkwo, during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday morning, criticised the president for his perceived lack of sympathy and a disconnect from the people when he visited Plateau after the Palm Sunday deadly attack, which claimed 28 lives.
“I don’t need to tell any Nigerian now that Nigeria is not working. You can imagine a president who went to Plateau he stayed at the airport, and told the victims to come and condole with him,” he stated.
In the power sector, Okonkwo recalled Tinubu’s campaign promise, in which he assured Nigerians that if he failed to deliver uninterrupted electricity, he should not be re-elected.
Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Peter Obi–Datti Baba-Ahmed campaign organisation in the 2023 presidential election, argued that the country’s security challenge is fundamental and that the current administration does not have a solution to it.
“This same president was the one who told Nigerians that if he did not provide electricity, let him be voted out. It is not just that there is no security; he is incapable of doing it,” Okonkwo declared.
He described the president’s campaign mantra—”Renewed Hope”—as renewed hopelessness.
“I told Nigerians from day one that this is renewed hopelessness. Without security, there is nothing you can do. Insecurity is a daily occurrence,” he said.
