Arsenal midfielder, Mikel Merino, has expressed excitement at the signing of Bruno Guimaraes.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup champion believes that the Gunners now possess one of the finest midfields in football following the Brazilian’s transfer from Newcastle.
Guimaraes, aged 28, has signed a four-year deal at the Emirates, with Arsenal investing £75 million to secure his services. The midfielder is expected to bring Premier League experience and quality to the title-contending squad of the north London club.
With Guimaraes’ significant addition, the competition for starting positions is set to intensify. Merino will find himself competing for playing time alongside Guimaraes, and he is confident that this will enhance the overall performance of the team.
Merino said that the Gunners likely have the best midfield in football.
He said, “Honestly, it’s unreal. Probably the best midfield in football. The amount of quality that we have there, with every player that can come on the pitch and make a good shift. It’s great.
“That’s good for the team. That’s good for the squad. It raises everyone’s level because if you have a bad day, the one that is close to you is going to do a great job.”
The Spaniard also shared his excitement after witnessing Guimaraes play for the first time during a pre-season match against Como. Merino praised his new teammate’s composure, technical skills, and defensive contributions.
“Amazing signing. He has proved throughout these years how good he is at Newcastle.
“A lot of composure, technical ability, a lot of defensive effort as well. So it’s a very good signing. A top player, but we have many of those in this team. So everyone that comes to help the team is welcome.”
Arsenal next face Manchester City in the FA Community Shield clash in Cardiff on Sunday.
