England manager Thomas Tuchel has insisted that extreme weather conditions and extensive travel across North America will not be used as excuses by his team as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions are currently training in Florida ahead of Saturday’s pre-tournament friendly against New Zealand national football team in Tampa Bay.
Sessions have been held in the hot and humid conditions of West Palm Beach as the squad acclimatises to the climate expected during the tournament.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Tuchel acknowledged the challenges awaiting his players but stressed that England must adapt if they hope to make a deep run in the competition.
“We don’t want it to be an excuse. It will be tough. It will be hopefully a long World Cup,” Tuchel said.

“It will be a lot of travelling, it will be a lot of adversity from the heat, from humidity.”
The German coach also expressed concerns about the condition of the newly relaid pitch at Tampa Bay ahead of the New Zealand fixture, although he indicated it would not influence his plans for the match. England are expected to make 11 substitutions at half-time as Tuchel assesses his squad.
“Let’s decide when we are there. If there are any issues we can always react to it,” he said.
England head into the tournament among the favourites alongside nations such as Argentina national football team, France national football team and Spain national football team. The team will play another warm-up match against Costa Rica national football team in Orlando before relocating to Kansas City for their final preparations.
England open their World Cup campaign on June 17 against Croatia national football team in Dallas, where temperatures are expected to climb to around 35 degrees Celsius.
Progression from the group stage could also see them travel to Mexico City for a potential round-of-16 encounter and Miami for a quarter-final tie.
According to Tuchel, handling such conditions is part of the challenge of competing for football’s biggest prize.
“That’s also the task for us, and that’s also what you want to achieve — that atmosphere where you stay calm, where we stay patient, and where we adapt to the circumstances,” he said.
“That’s just what it takes to go through the tournament.”
Despite concerns about the demanding climate, Tuchel said he would not abandon England’s aggressive playing style.
“There’s a value in recovering the ball high, even if it brings risk, even if it is highly intense,” he said.
England, runners-up at the last two European Championships, have been drawn in Group L alongside Ghana, Panama and Croatia. The opening match against Croatia will revive memories of the 2018 World Cup semi-final, where the Croatians eliminated England.
Tuchel expressed confidence in the experience available within his squad, noting that many of his players arrive after winning major honours with their clubs this season.
“We’re very, very happy that we have a lot of winners… it just lets your confidence grow in a genuine way, so it’s not artificial,” he said.
“Players know that they can handle the pressure. Players know that they performed in finals.”
The England boss revealed he already has “a clear idea of 14-15 starters that can start for us and should start for us and can carry this team” into the tournament.
Meanwhile, defender Ezri Konsa admitted the squad is still adjusting to the harsh conditions expected during the competition.
“Most of our players are not used to playing in this kind of heat,” Konsa said.
“But we’ve got to get used to it very quickly.”
