The United States has approved a potential $2.68bn Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine for air defence upgrades, missiles, launchers, counter-drone radars and related support.
The US State Department announced the proposed sale in a notification to Congress on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The package includes S-300 Clone missiles, GAM-67 missiles, range-extended air defence laser-guided rocket systems, Improvised Transporter Erector Launcher 1.5 systems and modification kits for mobile launchers.
It also includes RPS 202 counter-unmanned aircraft system radars, erectable mast trailers, spare parts, software, technical documentation and engineering, transportation and logistics support.
The proposed sale is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to defend against current and future aerial threats amid its ongoing war with Russia.
The State Department said Ukraine would finance the purchase through a combination of contributions from European countries and US Foreign Military Financing funds appropriated under the previous administration.
The Foreign Military Financing funds would be counted as a US capital contribution to the US-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund through a one-to-one reimbursement arrangement.
The proposed transaction remains subject to congressional review and has not yet resulted in a completed arms contract.
The US government said the proposed sale would not alter the basic military balance in the region or adversely affect US defence readiness.
Washington also said the equipment could be integrated into Ukraine’s armed forces without difficulty and that the deal would not require additional US government personnel or contractors to be deployed to Ukraine.
The principal contractors for the equipment would be selected through competitive procurement procedures.
The proposed package comes as Ukraine seeks to strengthen its air defences against Russian missile and drone attacks, with European countries also providing financial and military support.
