The United States Government and Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health have launched the Advanced Level of the Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) to strengthen the country’s capacity to detect and respond to disease outbreaks.
The programme, launched on July 30, is a two-year, in-country initiative developed through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
It includes a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Epidemiology and Disease Control and is designed to equip Sierra Leonean health professionals with advanced skills in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and response.
Announcing the initiative, the U.S. Government described it as “a major milestone for health security in Sierra Leone.”
It added that the programme “will equip Sierra Leonean health professionals with advanced skills to detect, investigate, and control disease outbreaks.”
The U.S. Government also congratulated the inaugural participants, saying: “Congratulations to the first cohort of advanced ‘disease detectives’.”
