US Strikes Iran’s Qeshm Island Amid Hormuz Tensions

The United States has carried out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, following reports of explosions in the area, US officials have said.

The strikes were conducted on Monday and targeted Iranian forces accused of using surface-to-air missiles against US assets, according to officials who spoke to American media.

A US official told Reuters that the operation was limited and did not signal a resumption of major combat operations against Iran.

Another official described the strikes as defensive measures against Iranian forces using surface-to-air missiles against American assets.

Iranian state media reported several explosions on Qeshm Island, which lies off the country’s southern coast near the Strait of Hormuz.

The US military action was also reported by the Wall Street Journal, which cited American officials.

The Pentagon referred questions about the strikes to the US Central Command, which had not responded to requests for comment at the time of the report.

The strikes come amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran over the strategic waterway, following a series of attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States has maintained a naval blockade of Iranian ports, while tensions persist over control of the Strait of Hormuz and the movement of commercial vessels through the waterway.

The development also comes as both countries pursue diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, with Qatar involved in mediation between Washington and Tehran.

US Vice President JD Vance said on Monday that he was optimistic about the prospects of reaching a negotiated settlement with Iran.

However, the latest strikes have raised fresh concerns about the possibility of renewed military confrontation between both countries.
