LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a trader, Afrobest Chinedu Eze, for the alleged rape of his 16-year-old housemaid, following a multi-day manhunt after the case was publicly reported. The suspect, who resides in the Iyana-Iba area of Lagos, was taken into custody on Wednesday by officers from the Iyana-Iba division.
The arrest comes after a news report and CCTV footage surface, detailing the ordeal of the teenager, identified only as Blessing (pseudonym), an orphan from a rural village who had been brought to Lagos by a relative to work as a maid in the Eze household approximately three months ago.
According to the initial report, the victim alleges that Mr. Eze, whom she refers to as her “uncle,” sexually assaulted her on three separate occasions when his wife, Mrs. Eze, was away from home. Upon her return, the victim further alleged that Mrs. Eze accused her of seducing her husband and subsequently subjected her to torture. Watch THE CCTV Video

Mr. Eze had previously denied the allegations when contacted by the press, stating the girl was lying. However, police efforts to locate him for questioning proved successful earlier this week.
Confirming the development, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Iba, Mr. Michael Falade, stated that the suspect had been detained. He noted that the case had been transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) for further processing and a more thorough investigation, following preliminary procedures.
The case has drawn the attention of child rights advocates. Mrs. Esther Ogwu, Executive Director of the Esther Child Rights Foundation, who is managing the victim’s case, has formally petitioned the Lagos State Government and the National Human Rights Commission. She is calling for the government to secure proper shelter and support for the minor.
“We are concerned that while the case lasts, the girl’s life may become stagnant even though she is already traumatised. That is why we submitted a letter to the Domestic and Sexual Violence Team of the Lagos State Government… to seek a concerted effort to help the girl,” Ogwu stated.
The police have assured the public that a detailed investigation is underway, with the aim of ensuring justice for the teenage victim.
