The Katsina State Government has launched its Safety, Security and Violence-Free Schools Policy in a move aimed at protecting students, teachers and learning environments across the state.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the initiative as a major milestone in efforts to safeguard education and secure the future of children in the state.
Radda said education remained central to development and peace, stressing that meaningful learning could only take place in safe and secure environments.
The governor expressed concern over growing threats facing schools, including insecurity, gender-based violence, bullying, gang activities, substance abuse and environmental hazards. He noted that schools in Katsina had also experienced challenges that disrupted learning and endangered lives.
“This is not just the unveiling of a policy document, but a clear declaration of our commitment to ensuring that every school in Katsina becomes a safe haven for learning,” he said.
The policy was adapted from the 2021 national framework on safe schools and modified to reflect local realities and challenges in the state.
According to the governor, the framework focuses on prevention and preparedness, strengthening early warning systems, emergency response and recovery mechanisms, as well as providing psychosocial support for affected learners and teachers.
Radda further explained that the policy integrates school safety into planning, budgeting and implementation processes at all levels of government.
He added that the framework clearly defines the responsibilities of key stakeholders, including government agencies, schools, security institutions, parents and community leaders, in ensuring safer learning environments across the state.
