We’ll Tackle Insecurity, Corruption, Poverty – Obi

Presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Obi has pledged to prioritise national unity, security, the fight against corruption and poverty reduction if elected president in 2027.

Obi made the commitment on Thursday during his nationwide Town Hall Series in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, where he interacted with residents and supporters on the challenges confronting the country.

The former Anambra State governor, who disclosed this in a statement after the engagement, said participants raised concerns about insecurity, particularly kidnapping and banditry, corruption, government borrowing and the deteriorating condition of public hospitals, schools and other essential facilities.

According to him, the most touching contribution came from a participant representing persons living with disabilities, who highlighted the difficulties they face and what he described as inadequate support from government and society.

Responding, Obi assured the participants that his administration, if elected, would make national unity, security and the fight against corruption his foremost priorities.

“Our foremost priorities will be to unite the country, decisively tackle insecurity and confront corruption, while pulling our people out of poverty,” he said.

Addressing the concerns of persons living with disabilities, Obi said the treatment of vulnerable citizens reflected the values of a nation.

“The compassion of a nation is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens,” he stated.

He promised to work with state governments to promote the inclusion, proper care and dignity of persons living with disabilities.

Obi also pledged massive investment in education and healthcare, including the establishment of at least one fully functional primary healthcare centre in every political ward across the country.

He said his proposed administration would equally work towards reducing the cost of living and expanding economic opportunities for Nigerians.

Earlier in the day, Obi visited the Nkalagu and Ezillo communities, where he interacted with supporters and residents.

He also visited a market in Ezillo, engaging women traders involved in the sale of agricultural produce.

In Abakaliki, he joined party supporters on a road walk to the venue of the town hall meeting, where residents had the opportunity to present their concerns and expectations.

Obi, who had visited Akwanga in Nasarawa State on Wednesday as part of the nationwide sensitisation tour, thanked Ebonyi residents, party members and organisers for their reception and participation.

He expressed optimism about the country’s future, declaring: “A New Nigeria is possible, and Nigeria will be OK!”
