The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was officially registered as a political party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on February 5, 2026, alongside the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), following years of legal challenges.
The NDC initially applied to INEC in 2017 and received final approval through a Federal High Court.
Leadership Structure Takes Shape
The NDC has moved fast to form its national leadership, with officers functioning in a pro-tempore capacity until approval at the party’s inaugural National Convention.
According to INEC records and party assertions, the main national officers are:
- National Chairman: Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe.
- National Secretary: Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu
- National Treasurer: Mr. John Odey.
- National Financial Secretary: Hon. Mainasara Abubakar Sani.
- National Legal Adviser: Barr. Reuben Egwuaba (who accepted the INEC certificate on the party’s behalf).
To ensure broad representation, the party has appointed National Vice Chairmen from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones: Mohammed Bakin Zuwo (North West), Dr. Danlami Arabs (North East), Chief Barnabas Ejisi (North Central), Barr. Frederick Owotorufa (South South), Chief Teddy Obey (South East), and Pastor Dr. Mrs. Adedayo Ekong (South West). Pro-tem State Chairmen have been appointed across the country to spearhead grassroots mobilisation.
Party officials praised the nominations as deliberate moves towards creating an inclusive, national-focused organisation.
Early Activities and 2027 Ambitions
The NDC has made a strong start since its registration. The party has initiated a digital membership registration campaign, established state organisations, and notified INEC of its internal activity schedule.
It began nationwide congresses on May 1, 2026, with its inaugural National Convention slated for May 9, 2026, in Abuja. The convention is scheduled to formalise leadership posts, adopt the party constitution, and lay out a clear roadmap for running candidates in the 2027 elections. Primaries are tentatively scheduled to commence later in May.
Party leaders issued a statement expressing confidence in their structures and a commitment to democratic competition. “Today’s event marks the culmination of NDC’s long and torturous fight for registration,” Barr said. Reuben Egwuaba commented during the certificate presentation.
The NDC joins the expanding list of political groups attempting to challenge the dominance of Nigeria’s major parties. Analysts believe its success will be determined by how well it converts early organisational momentum into broad membership and viable candidates.
As the political landscape shifts towards 2027, all eyes will be on whether the Nigeria Democratic Congress can establish a distinct identity and garner considerable support across the country.
