Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has challenged former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi to honour his pledge to stop campaigning for the presidency if claims about debts and other liabilities left behind by his administration are established.
Onanuga made the comment in a post on X while reacting to the latest statement from the Anambra State Government on the state’s finances under Obi.
Obi, who governed Anambra from 2006 to 2014, had rejected the allegations and maintained that his administration cleared outstanding salaries, pensions, gratuities and other obligations before handing over power. He also said he left more than ₦75 billion in savings.
The former governor further challenged the state government to provide evidence to the contrary, saying:
“If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning.”
However, the Anambra government has since released further figures, saying loans contracted during the Obi administration remain outstanding. The government put the external loans contracted under Obi at $123.77 million, with $92.35 million still outstanding as of June 30, 2026. It also disputed Obi’s claim that more than ₦2.13 billion was left in a First Bank account as an ecological fund.
Reacting to the development, Onanuga wrote:
“Peter Obi claimed he left Anambra with a clean slate of debt and even threatened to quit the presidential race if his claims were proven otherwise. Now, the Anambra government has confronted him with facts and figures showing he owed Water Corporation workers, teachers, and pension and gratuities, and had also borrowed for frivolous things. The ball is back in his court. Will he follow through on his threat by quitting the race?”
