Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has linked Nigeria’s poor electricity supply to the country’s population growth, arguing that lack of power limits nightlife and leaves people with fewer recreational options at night.
Fayose made the remark while discussing the wider effects of unreliable electricity supply, suggesting that when it gets dark early, many Nigerians are forced to remain indoors and spend more time with their spouses.
He said, “When you don’t address this issue of electricity, the people at that level have no alternative attraction. Nothing else matters to them. After seven o’clock, it gets dark, everybody is engaging their wives and the population simply becomes double.
“The simple problem is because there’s lack of electricity. People go to bed early. Their mind is simply prepared that if this is the only available recreation, let me remain here.
“But when we address this electricity, there’ll be nightlife, there’ll be recreation outside your wife.”
Fayose’s comments have since sparked reactions online, with Nigerians debating whether poor electricity supply, rising poverty or other social factors contribute to the country’s population growth.
