U.S. President Donald Trump has promised to give every adult American citizen a $5,000 payment if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November 2026 midterm elections.
Trump made the pledge during the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas, describing the proposed payment as a “Trump dividend.”
He said, “If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000.” He added that the money would have to be spent within the United States.
Trump did not provide details on how the proposed payments would be funded or implemented. Reports estimate that extending the payment to roughly 270 million U.S. adults could cost about $1.35 trillion.
The proposal has already attracted questions over its financing and legality. Legal analysts noted that Trump would need congressional approval to distribute such a large payment, while critics have questioned whether the government can afford the scheme amid a huge budget deficit and national debt.
Trump has previously proposed direct payments to Americans, including a $2,000 tariff-funded dividend, but that proposal was never implemented.
The announcement has also generated reactions among Nigerians, with some comparing the promise to campaign promises commonly associated with politicians in Nigeria.
