Residents of Inyi Community in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State were reportedly thrown into confusion after a dramatic operation carried out by a group of women who accused several female occupants of a residential building of engaging in activities they claimed were damaging the community’s moral values.
According to reports, the women mobilized themselves and marched to the building, where they confronted the occupants and demanded that they immediately vacate the community. The occupants were accused of allegedly influencing young people negatively, having relationships with married men, and being connected to alleged abortion-related activities. However, these allegations have not been confirmed by law enforcement or tested in court.
Eyewitnesses claimed the confrontation attracted a large crowd as emotions ran high, with members of the community insisting they could no longer tolerate what they described as behavior capable of tarnishing the image of the area.
The situation reportedly took another dramatic turn when the women allegedly discovered a woman described locally as an “Ezenwanyi”—a title commonly used in some Igbo communities for a female traditional spiritual practitioner—living in the same building. Her alleged presence further fueled tensions and drew the attention of community leaders.
As the standoff intensified, the President General of the community and other local leaders were said to have intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further. Reports indicate that a bus was eventually arranged to transport the affected women out of the community, bringing the tense confrontation to an end.
The incident has since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians divided over the actions taken by the community. While some applauded what they viewed as an effort to preserve community values, others criticized the incident as an example of public shaming and vigilante-style justice carried out without legal backing.
As of the time of reporting, no official statement had been issued by the police confirming the allegations against the evicted women. The claims regarding alleged prostitution, affairs with married men, abortion-related activities, and native practices remain allegations made within the community.
