The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and tactical commanders to intensify patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering ahead of the ember months and the 2027 general elections.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, during a strategic security meeting with senior officers on Thursday, October 15, 2026, in Abuja.
Sanusi also ordered police commanders to identify crime-prone areas across the territory and conduct raids to prevent emerging security threats ahead of the election period.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the meeting reviewed security strategies and operational readiness to strengthen policing across the FCT during the festive season and the run-up to the 2027 elections.
The police commissioner directed officers to step up efforts to prevent armed robbery, kidnapping, car theft and other violent crimes, stressing the need for proactive policing and sustained intelligence gathering.
He also urged personnel to maintain professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights while responding promptly to distress calls from residents.
On election security, Sanusi instructed Area Commanders and DPOs to strengthen visible policing and ensure strict compliance with electoral security guidelines to guarantee a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
The Command did not disclose specific locations targeted for the planned raids or provide details of any additional security deployments ahead of the elections.
The police commissioner also raised concerns over the increasing number of road construction projects within Abuja’s city centre, warning that the activities could worsen traffic congestion and obstruct vehicular movement.
He directed traffic control departments and divisional traffic officers to improve traffic management and coordinate vehicle movement, particularly during peak periods.
Officers deployed for traffic duties were also instructed to remain courteous and professional while ensuring the free flow of vehicles on major roads.
The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements and activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency telephone lines: 08028940883 and 08032003913.
