The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) community has been thrown into mourning following the discovery of the lifeless body of a 100-level student, identified as Favour Olaniyi.
The deceased, a male student of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, was found in a bush near the North Gate of the institution under circumstances that have raised suspicions of suicide.
According to sources, an empty bottle believed to have contained a lethal herbicide was recovered at the scene, further deepening concerns over the nature of his death.
The tragic discovery sparked emotional reactions across the campus, with students and nearby residents seen gathered in groups, expressing shock and grief over the incident.
Confirming the development, the Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol at FUTA, Adegbenro Adebanjo, expressed the university’s sorrow over the loss.
He revealed that the deceased’s family had been notified and assured that the institution is cooperating fully with security agencies.
“The Students Affairs Division has consistently demonstrated its readiness to support students facing challenges. We urge students to take advantage of available counselling and guidance services whenever needed,” Adebanjo stated.
Also speaking, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Command, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that an investigation has commenced.
He noted that preliminary observations showed no visible signs of violence on the body.
“The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and further examination. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” Jimoh said.
The university has since intensified counselling efforts to support students affected by the tragedy, while authorities continue to probe the cause of death.
