A woman has shared a troubling account of alleged exploitation at a private school where she served, recounting how low pay, intimidation and overwork took a toll on staff, particularly a senior teacher identified as Uncle Femi.
The story, shared online on Tuesday, has reignited conversations around teachers’ welfare, labour abuse and regulation of low-cost private schools across the country.
According to her account, the school paid her N9,000 irregularly, a situation she said affected her health and mental well-being.
She alleged that attempts to resign were blocked by the school’s proprietor, leaving her trapped in a stressful environment.
However, she said the worst case was that of Uncle Femi, a university graduate in Mathematics who handled multiple science subjects across junior and senior classes.
A daily struggle behind the classroom
“This man truly suffered, I swear. He taught Mathematics, Physics and Further Mathematics from JSS1 to SS3. One day he came late around 8:30 a.m. and the principal had already written him a query. He couldn’t even defend himself.”
She said she later discovered that the teacher trekked to school daily, leaving home as early as 6:00 a.m. to arrive by 7:30 or 8:00 a.m., a journey of nearly two hours, due to his inability to afford transport.
More work, little reward
“When the English teacher resigned, they asked him to take English too and promised to add something to his salary. Do you know how much they paid him for four subjects? N25,000.”
The account comes months after private school teachers in Lagos raised similar concerns in November 2025, calling for minimum wage enforcement and better oversight.
