“I Didn’t Want To Get Too Comfortable”- Femi Dapson Explains Why He Quit Winners’ Church

Music producer Femi Dapson has recounted how he walked away from a lucrative position at Winners’ Church to pursue better opportunities in Lagos.

Speaking during an interview with Chude Jideonwo, Dapson reflected on the early days of his career and explained why he chose to leave a comfortable position at the church despite having reached a senior level.

According to him, he had risen to what he described as a CEO-level position without a university degree. His role also gave him the opportunity to interact with high-profile personalities, including presidents, and dress formally for his duties.

However, Dapson said he became concerned that staying in the position could make him too comfortable, prompting him to take a bold step toward building a career and making money on his own.

He said: “I had to leave Winners, honestly, because I was like, if I stay here, I’ll get too comfortable. At the time, I was CEO level. I was already working at the highest level of church no uni degree.

“I was wearing ties. I was meeting with presidents. I was like, Omo, don’t get carried away. You need to go and make money. And then I left. I came to Lagos.

“And when I got to Lagos, I did a cleaning job for a bit. And I saw a job opportunity in a newspaper, actually on the back of a newspaper. And I just said Let me just apply”.

Dapson further recalled his surprise when he arrived for the interview and discovered that several candidates had university degrees.

He admitted that while he lacked a degree, his confidence and experience from his time at Winners’ Church helped him stand out during the interview.

“There were people with BScs there, bro. I kid you not. There were people with BScs. And I was there in the interview. I was like, Omo, this is crázy.

“But when I entered there, as I said, I know how to make mouth. So I sold them dreams, and they were so excited. I was telling them that, see, I will make your life easy. This is what I was doing in Winners. Visiting entry. And they were so happy about it”.

He explained that his ability to communicate his previous experience and convince the employers eventually landed him the position, marking the beginning of his journey as a junior editor.
