Abia State Governor Alex Otti has again affirmed that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi left about $155 million for Anambra State before leaving office.
Otti made the claim while speaking on Arise TV on Friday morning, revisiting his account of the funds and his involvement in the transaction when he was the Chief Executive Officer of Diamond Bank.
According to him, Obi initially wanted to leave the funds in naira, but he advised him to keep the money in dollars.
“As the CEO of Diamond Bank then, Peter Obi left $155 million. I can attest to that. He wanted to leave it in naira, but I advised him to leave it in dollars.”
Otti has previously made a similar claim, saying he personally helped Obi convert about $155 million from naira to dollars, after which the funds were invested in Eurobonds and Tier-2 capital instruments of some banks.
His latest comments come amid renewed debate over the financial position Obi left behind when he handed over Anambra State in 2014.
Obi also spoke on the issue during an Arise News interview on Thursday, insisting that he left Anambra financially strong and with more than $150 million in funds.
