Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has vowed to expose any attempt to cover up wrongdoing in the investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in Niger State.
Adeyanju is a member of the 10-member independent committee constituted by the Federal Government to investigate the deaths of the detainees, who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on September 17, 2026. The government said the committee will investigate their arrests, detention and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Speaking on his role on the committee, Adeyanju said he considers himself a representative of the victims and would not allow anyone to suppress the truth.
He said:
“I feel that I am on that committee to serve the interests of those who have been murdered brutally and gruesomely murdered. So, I am there to represent the victims, and I will make sure there is no cover-up or that nobody tries to suppress any wrongdoing; if they try to do so, I will expose them.”
Adeyanju had earlier said he accepted the appointment to ensure that the victims’ interests were protected and the truth established. He also said he would not accept any stipend or honorarium for the assignment.
