The National Association of Nigerian Students has appealed to the management of the University of Lagos to reopen its school fees payment and course registration portal for 48 hours to enable affected students complete their registration ahead of the first semester examinations.
In a statement dated July 31, 2026, and signed by its President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the students’ body expressed concern over the closure of the portal on June 21, despite examinations not being scheduled to begin until August 10.
NANS said the decision had left many students unable to complete their registration at a time of widespread economic hardship.
“The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students views, with grave concern, the sudden closure of the school fees payment and course registration portal at the University of Lagos. The portal was shut on June 21 even though examinations are not scheduled to commence until August 10. Many students who were making genuine efforts to raise their school fees have now been shut out entirely, placing their academic pursuits at serious risk through no fault of their own,” the statement read.
The association argued that the current economic situation and the Federal Government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund initiative made it necessary for institutions to show greater flexibility to students facing financial challenges.
“This decision comes at a time when the country is grappling with unprecedented economic hardship, while the President has introduced the NELFUND initiative to make education more accessible. Parents and students are already under immense financial pressure, and institutions should show leniency by keeping their portals open long enough to accommodate those still making genuine efforts to pay. Closing the portal this early undermines the spirit of expanding access to education,” the statement added.
While acknowledging the university’s authority to determine how its registration portal is managed, NANS appealed to the institution to exercise discretion with compassion.
“We do not dispute the prerogative of the university management to determine the administration of its own portal. However, we respectfully appeal that this right be exercised with clemency and consideration by reopening the portal for payment and registration for at least 48 hours. This will give affected students one final opportunity to complete their registration before examinations begin because justice should never be devoid of mercy,” the association stated.
NANS called on the university to urgently reconsider its decision in light of prevailing economic realities.
“We urge the management of the University of Lagos to act on this matter in the most humane way possible and reopen the portal without further delay. The concerns of these students should not fall through the cracks. NANS remains committed to ensuring that no Nigerian student is denied access to education and will continue to represent the collective interests of students across the country,” the statement concluded.
