The Nigerian Forest Security Service has deployed personnel to Garko Local Government Area of Kano State following reports of suspected rabid dogs attacking residents across several communities.
The deployment followed reports that one dog had bitten 18 people in Garko town and neighbouring communities, while two other dogs were also suspected to have contracted rabies.
NFSS Kano State Commander, Abdullahi Al’ameen, said the first dog attacked 11 people in Garko before moving to Raba, Kadage, Gurjiya and Dausai, where seven additional residents were bitten.
Al’ameen disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Usman Abdullahi-Umar.
He said personnel from the NFSS Garko Division, led by the Divisional Forest Officer, Auwalu Muhammad, had been deployed to track and contain the suspected rabid dogs.
The commander urged residents of the affected communities to remain vigilant and promptly report sightings of stray or suspected rabid dogs to the NFSS or other security agencies.
He also advised anyone bitten by a suspected rabid dog to seek immediate medical attention.
Al’ameen assured residents that the command was monitoring the situation and would take necessary measures to prevent further attacks.
