The Nigerian Army has approved a fresh redeployment of senior officers across key operational theatres, command formations and strategic departments.
Politics Nigeria reports that the latest changes were approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
They affect several senior commanders, including officers being moved into critical operational, administrative, training and staff positions.
The Army said the exercise was designed to place experienced officers in positions where their expertise could have the greatest impact.
This latest move comes as troops continue to operate across several parts of the country against terrorism, banditry and other security threats.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.
One of the most significant changes is the appointment of Major General IA Ajose as the new Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI.
Ajose is moving from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations to take charge of the military formation responsible for counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.
He replaces the outgoing leadership in the theatre at a time when troops remain engaged in sustained operations against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists.
Major General AE Abubakar, who previously served under Operation HADIN KAI, has meanwhile been moved to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.
He will serve as Dean of the Faculty of Operational Research at the centre.
The latest posting also affects several other senior generals.
Major General AM Alechenu has been transferred from the Defence Headquarters Garrison to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.
Major General RT Utsaha is moving from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to become Commander of the Defence Headquarters Garrison.
Major General AM Umar has been appointed Commandant of the Army War College Nigeria, while Major General UM Alkali takes over at the Department of Civil-Military Affairs.
The Army War College plays an important role in the professional development and higher-level military training of officers.
The appointment therefore places Umar in a key position within the Army’s training and leadership development structure.
Another major appointment involves Major General GS Muhammed, who is being redeployed from the Office of the National Security Adviser to the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation.
He will serve as Director General of the corporation.
Major General JE Osifo is moving from the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation to the Military Pension Board, where he will serve as Chairman.
The Army has also redeployed Major General IE Ekpenyong to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics as Director of Engineering Services.
The changes are not limited to the senior command level.
Several brigadier generals have also received new assignments across operational and command formations.
Brigadier Generals AA Bello, MS Adamu, MS Sule, I Sule, E Azenda and AS Bugaje are among the officers affected by the latest exercise.
The appointments include new brigade command responsibilities and other strategic staff positions.
The redeployment of officers into operational theatres is particularly significant given the security pressure confronting the country.
The Nigerian Army currently maintains operations in different regions as part of efforts to counter terrorism, armed banditry, communal violence, oil-related crimes and other threats to national security.
Operation HADIN KAI remains one of the Army’s major counter-insurgency operations.
It covers the North-East, where troops have continued to conduct offensive operations, patrols and other missions against terrorist groups.
The decision to appoint a new Theatre Commander for the operation therefore places Major General Ajose at the centre of one of the military’s most important operational responsibilities.
The latest leadership changes also come after the Army announced a broader reshuffle in June 2026 involving General Officers Commanding, brigade commanders, commandants of military institutions and senior officers at Army Headquarters.
That earlier exercise included the appointment of Major General WM Dangana as GOC 3 Division and Commander of Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE, as well as Major General EI Okoro as GOC 6 Division and Land Component Commander of Operation DELTA SAFE.
The Chief of Army Staff charged the newly appointed officers to justify the confidence placed in them.
Shaibu urged them to demonstrate professionalism, innovation and strong leadership in their new assignments.
He also reminded the officers of the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigerian Army.
“The COAS charged the newly appointed senior officers to justify the confidence reposed in them by demonstrating exemplary leadership, professionalism, innovation and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian Army’s constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity and supporting civil authority in maintaining peace and security across the nation.”
The Army said the changes were part of its broader transformation efforts.
It added that the service remains committed to building “a highly professional, combat-ready and people-oriented force capable of effectively addressing contemporary and future security challenges in pursuit of Nigeria’s national security objectives.”
The redeployments are expected to take effect as the affected officers assume their new responsibilities.
