Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly thanked Peter Obi for repeatedly checking on his family during his father’s detention and subsequent legal troubles.
Speaking about the experience, the Kaduna North federal lawmaker said Obi had consistently contacted him to ask about his father despite the fact that he previously criticised the former Anambra State governor.
“I Want To Personally Thank His Excellency, Peter Obi. He Kept Checking Up On Us. This Is Someone I Use To Criticize In The Past.”
He added that several other politicians, including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, also contacted him to ask about his father.
“Politicians like Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Kwankwaso and others called me to ask about my dad. I would like to thank them, particularly Mr Peter Obi. He always called me to ask about my dad.”
Nasir El-Rufai was detained by the ICPC in February 2026 in connection with an investigation into alleged financial misconduct. The DSS also filed charges against him over alleged interception of the National Security Adviser’s telephone communications. He was later released from ICPC custody in March.
Bello, who initially entered the House of Representatives on the APC platform, defected to the African Democratic Congress in May 2026 and subsequently secured the party’s ticket to seek another term representing Kaduna North.
His comments about Obi have since sparked reactions online.
