Police in Bauchi State have arrested a 26-year-old man, Lukman Alhaji Nasiru, for allegedly raping a 50-year-old mentally ill woman in Gamawa Local Government Area of the state.
Nasiru, a resident of Garin Malam Village, Gamawa, was arrested after the victim’s younger brother reported the alleged assault to the police.
According to a statement issued by the Bauchi State Police Command on Saturday, the incident occurred on September 22, 2026, around 12:15pm.
The victim was allegedly lured by Nasiru to an isolated area on the outskirts of Garin Malam, where he allegedly had unlawful sexual intercourse with her.
The woman’s 40-year-old brother, who resides in Gauya Village in Jakusko Local Government Area of neighbouring Yobe State, reported the incident at the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters on September 25.
The police said Nasiru was promptly arrested following the report.
The suspect and the victim were subsequently taken to the General Hospital, Gamawa, for medical examination as investigations into the alleged rape continue.
The police did not disclose the nature of the victim’s mental illness or provide further details about her condition.
The development came as the command also announced the arrest of three suspects over the alleged fabrication and possession of locally made firearms in Misau Local Government Area.
The suspects were identified as Abubakar Ahmad, 30, Tijjani Yakubu, 35, and Bappah Kawu, 48.
The police said Ahmad was intercepted on September 25 while on court duty at the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Misau, allegedly carrying a locally fabricated pistol loaded with a live cartridge.
Investigators reportedly discovered that Ahmad was attempting to hand over the firearm to Yakubu, who was being remanded at a correctional centre over alleged criminal conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property.
According to the police, Yakubu later confessed that the firearm belonged to him and that he had given it to Ahmad for safekeeping.
He allegedly told investigators that he bought the pistol from Kawu, a welder in Tashar Masu, Misau.
Kawu was subsequently arrested and allegedly confessed to fabricating and selling the pistol to Yakubu for N30,000.
Police said a search of Kawu’s workshop led to the recovery of two locally made Dane guns and tools allegedly used in firearm fabrication, including a hacksaw, files and long iron pipes.
The three suspects are currently in police custody, while the firearm case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, said the command would maintain its zero-tolerance stance against sexual offences and illegal firearms.
He also urged residents to provide the police with timely and credible information to assist investigations and prevent crime.
