The Nigeria Police Force has concluded a Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (C-WMD) Curriculum Development Workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of its personnel to prevent and respond to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive threats.
The workshop, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, was organised in partnership with the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
The programme marked the final phase of a Train-the-Trainers initiative designed to institutionalise specialised C-WMD knowledge within the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Command.
The event was attended by delegations led by Major Brittany Brown of the DTRA, Mrs Pamela West of the ONSA, and Commissioner of Police Hauwa Ibrahim, who heads the Police EOD-CBRN Command.
Declaring the workshop open on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Umar Shehu Nadada, said the growing threat posed by weapons of mass destruction required proactive policing, continuous training and stronger collaboration among security agencies and international partners.
“The evolving nature of weapons of mass destruction demands proactive policing, continuous operational training and deeper inter-agency and international collaboration,” Nadada said.
He described the workshop as a strategic investment in the Force’s operational readiness to protect lives, secure critical infrastructure and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
Nadada also conveyed the Inspector-General’s appreciation to the DTRA and ONSA for supporting the initiative and urged participants to uphold professionalism and transfer the knowledge gained to other personnel across the Force.
In her remarks, CP Hauwa Ibrahim reaffirmed the EOD-CBRN Command’s commitment to integrating the new curriculum into standard police training programmes.
“We remain committed to fully integrating the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction framework into standard police training while continuing to seek collaboration in specialised equipment procurement, technical assistance and advanced capacity building,” she said.
The Nigeria Police Force said the workshop reflects its commitment to strengthening specialised operational capabilities through sustained inter-agency cooperation and international partnerships in line with global best practices.
