Abia State Governor Alex Otti has spoken on the ₦191.2 billion debt he said his administration inherited from the previous government, warning that some people could unfortunately be affected if the issue is revisited.
Otti made the statement while speaking on Arise TV on Friday morning, as he explained how his administration had managed the debt since assuming office.
According to the governor, his administration has paid almost 75% of the inherited debt after reducing the cost of governance by 20%.
He said:
“If I go back to the debt left by the past government, some people will unfortunately be affected. I inherited a debt of ₦191.2 billion, but I have been able to pay almost 75% of the debt. How I was able to do this was by reducing the cost of governance by 20%, because that was a major problem.”
Otti had previously disclosed in November 2024 that his administration inherited a debt stock of ₦191.2 billion and had at that time paid almost ₦90 billion without borrowing.
