Trump reveals Melania's reaction as shots heard at White House correspondents' dinner

Donald Trump revealed how his wife Melania reacted to the incident that unfolded at the Washington Hilton Hotel during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The US President and First Lady were evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after gunshots were reported at the premises.

Journalists attending the yearly event – attended for the first time by Mr Trump during his presidency – were seen ducking under tables as officers stormed the room to bring members of the presidential cabinet to safety. Mr Trump held a brief press conference after the incident, saying a suspect had been taken into custody.

During the briefing, he also spoke about how his wife reacted to the chilling event. He said: “It’s always shocking when something like this happens.

“The fact that we were sitting next to each other, the first lady on my right, and I heard a noise.”

He also said: “I heard a noise and kinda thought it was a tray going down.”

However, he added, the First Lady immediately recognised the suspected gunshots as a “bad noise”.

He said, describing her reaction: “Melania was very cognizant.”
