Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk rose to the occasion to give his club a vital 2–1 victory over Everton in Sunday’s Merseyside derby, news.ng reports.
Van Dijk scored in the 90+10th minute to snatch a late winner after both teams had been level at 1–1 for 99 minutes.
Liverpool will now focus on securing at least a place in the UEFA Champions League or Europa League next season after crashing out of continental competition on Tuesday.
Liverpool is currently fifth in the table with 55 points.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa recorded a big victory over Sunderland in a match that nearly ended 3–3 before Tammy Abraham found the back of the net from close range to make it 4–3.
Villa share 58 points with Manchester United (3rd) but are fourth due to an inferior goal difference compared to the Red Devils.
Also, Nottingham Forest are safe from relegation after a deserved 4–1 victory over Burnley FC.
Burnley were the first to take the lead before half-time, courtesy of Zian Flemming, before Morgan Gibbs-White’s hat-trick for Forest in the 62nd, 69th, and 77th minutes. Igor Jesus extended the lead by scoring a late goal in the 90+8th minute to make it 4–1.
Forest are 16th on the table with 36 points, while Burnley have been pushed further into the relegation zone in 19th place.
