Russia on Monday declared a unilateral ceasefire with Ukraine, ahead of its World War II Victory Day commemorations across the federation.
The Defence Ministry announced the ceasefire will be observed between May 8–9, saying Russia expects the Ukrainian side to follow suit.
The government warns Kyiv against implementing “its criminal plans” to disrupt the celebration, amid threats by Ukraine that its drones could fly over Moscow.
The statement added that in the event of any breach, the Russian Armed Forces “will launch a retaliatory, massive missile strike on the centre of Kiev”
The military authority also advised the civilian population in the Ukrainian capital and employees of foreign diplomatic missions “to leave the city promptly.”
President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said Ukraine will observe its own ceasefire with Russia between May 5-6, vowing that Kyiv will act reciprocally if Moscow strikes its territory.
The leader confirmed there has been no communication with Ukraine regarding the cessation of hostilities, but stressed that “human life is far more valuable than any anniversary celebration.”
Zelensky urged Russian leaders to take real steps to end the war, saying the Defense Ministry already acknowledged “it cannot hold a parade in Moscow without Ukraine’s goodwill.”
Russia has scaled back the 2026 parade due to security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict. The event will be held without military equipment, the first time in nearly two decades.
