The Nigerian music industry was recently thrown into mourning following the passing of veteran juju musician Prof. Y.K. Ajao.
Although the cause of death was not revealed, colleagues and fans from the entertainment and cultural community have continued to mourn.
Afrojuju star Sir Shina Peters was among those who responded, saying the late singer was very close to him.
He said Ajao was more than a friend, calling him a brother whose music and personality would always be remembered.
He added that he would always cherish their memories together and that Ajao’s work and legacy would live on.

Ajao was born in Iseyin in southwestern Nigeria, where he became interested in music at a young age. He started out by joining a band in Ibadan, then went on to form his own group, Y.K. Ajao and His Professional Brothers Band. Over the years, he made a name for himself in juju music.
He became more widely known after releasing Makosa Series 1, which brought him into the spotlight as juju music evolved. He later released Makosa Series 2 and Vigilante, helping to grow the genre in Nigeria and abroad.
During his career, King Sunny Ade recognised him by giving him a ceremonial title at a major event in Lagos, when juju music was at its peak.
Besides performing, Ajao also combined music with academics, using his knowledge to help preserve and grow traditional Nigerian music.
