A Nigerian lady has recounted the tragic death of her neighbour, who reportedly lost his life in the fire outbreak at Oluku Market in Benin City, Edo State, after going to collect fuel from a fallen tanker.
The lady, while narrating the incident, expressed sadness over the man’s death and criticised the tendency of some men to take dangerous risks in a bid to obtain free fuel.
According to her account, the man was getting ready to leave home on the morning of the incident when his wife asked where he was going.
He reportedly told his wife that he wanted to collect free fuel from the fallen tanker. However, what appeared to be an opportunity to get fuel without paying for it ended in tragedy, as he was caught in the fire and burnt to death.
Reacting to the incident, the lady lamented, saying, “You men like putting us in trouble.”
Her account has drawn attention to the dangers associated with rushing to scoop fuel from fallen tankers, particularly when people gather around vehicles carrying highly flammable substances.
The incident serves as a painful reminder of the risks involved in attempting to collect fuel from accident scenes, where a single spark can trigger a devastating fire.
