The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has warned that 17 states are at risk of flooding between July 21 and July 27, 2026, urging residents in vulnerable communities to take immediate precautionary measures.
In its National Flood Advisory (Alert No. NFA-2026-200) issued on Tuesday, the agency forecast a medium flood risk across the affected states, including Bauchi, Edo, Imo, Kaduna, Plateau and Benue, as well as 11 others.
NiHSA Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Arc. Umar Mohammed, said rising water levels at key monitoring stations indicate a high likelihood of localised flooding along major river channels and floodplains.
“Our hydrological monitoring network indicates that river stages at critical monitoring stations, including Saminara on the Karam River, Waya Dam Site on the Waya River and Amber on the Amber River, have exceeded watch and warning thresholds,” he said.
“With 16 gauging stations showing elevated stages, communities along the primary channels face imminent localised flooding. We strongly advise state governments, local authorities and residents on floodplains to act immediately.”
According to the advisory, thousands of communities, schools, health facilities, markets, religious centres and farmlands could be affected if the flooding materialises.
NiHSA urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), local governments and community leaders to immediately evacuate residents from flood-prone areas, pre-position relief materials and activate early warning systems.
The agency also advised members of the public to avoid walking or driving through flooded roads, clear blocked drainage channels and monitor its daily flood bulletins for updates.
