A Nigerian serving in the United States military has triggered a wave of reactions online after questioning whether there are any clear advantages to being a Nigerian and living in Nigeria.
The serviceman made the remarks in a video that has gained attention on social media, where he challenged Nigerians to name at least one benefit of residing in the country.
Reflecting on the question, he admitted that he found it difficult to come up with an answer.
“I didn’t know what to say. Come to think of it, there is not actually one single benefit of being a Nigerian in Nigeria.”
He went on to encourage Nigerians to think about the issue for themselves, asking: “What is one benefit of being a Nigerian in Nigeria?”
While expressing concerns about life in the country, the serviceman acknowledged the determination and work ethic of Nigerians, especially those who have moved abroad and established themselves in different parts of the world.
He said, “Nigerians all over the world are the most resilient, hard-working people you can ever get.”
However, he maintained that there is a significant difference between identifying as Nigerian and actually living in Nigeria.
According to him, “The idea of being a Nigerian is mind-blowing, but the idea of being a Nigerian in Nigeria is demeaning.”
He concluded by throwing the question back to his audience, asking those who disagreed with his position to point out a benefit he might have missed.
“If you know any single benefit of being a Nigerian in Nigeria, tell me in the comment section.”
