Former Super Eagles captain and Al-Ahli defender William Troost-Ekong has converted to Islam.
Troost-Ekong reportedly recited the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar, where he currently plays for Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli, according to Qatari newspaper Al-Arab, which first reported the news.
A respected Islamic cleric, Dr Muhammad Salah, also posted a video on his verified Facebook account showing the defender reciting the Islamic declaration of faith.
The 33-year-old defender first moved to the Arab region in the summer of 2024 when he joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Khaleej.
He later moved to Qatari side Al-Ahli in January 2026, signing a one-and-a-half-year contract.
Since joining the club, he has made 14 appearances across all competitions, including one appearance so far this season.
At international level, Troost-Ekong earned 83 caps for Nigeria between 2015 and 2025, scoring eight goals.
He helped Nigeria reach the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s best player.
Troost-Ekong also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games, establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced defenders over the past decade.
He enjoyed a distinguished international career with the Super Eagles, making more than 70 appearances for the national team.
