Gender-based violence, including rape and domestic violence, accounted for the bulk of the 9,969 human rights complaints received by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Bauchi State between January and October 2026.
The commission’s State Coordinator, Mrs Yachit Dala, disclosed this on Wednesday in Bauchi during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, saying 3,305 cases were resolved while 6,664 remained pending.
Dala said the commission resolved 3,305 cases within the period, while the remaining complaints were still pending.
She said the cases involved gender-based violence, rape, sexual and domestic violence, mistreatment, abandonment of parental responsibilities, and violations of civil and political rights.
According to her, the commission receives, assesses and registers complaints to facilitate their amicable resolution.
“The commission also investigates allegations and sets up special panels or tribunals to hear petitions and review testimonies,” she said.
Dala added that the NHRC provides support to victims and makes recommendations to promote the resolution of disputes.
She, however, identified inadequate funding, low public awareness and illiteracy as major challenges affecting the commission’s operations.
The coordinator urged residents to report human rights abuses, while calling on youth and women’s groups to lead campaigns against violations.
