The Imo State Police Command has detained a police traffic warden and two State Civil Guard Corps personnel over alleged harassment and extortion of a motorist in Owerri.
The incident, captured in a viral video, reportedly occurred on October 8, 2026, when the officials allegedly harassed and extorted a motorist accused of driving without a driver’s licence.
The police identified the traffic warden as Inspector Chinewe Ejiogu, attached to the Shell Camp Divisional Police Headquarters, while the two civil guard personnel were identified as Kelechi Nzediagwu and Onyedikachi Chibuike.
The three individuals are currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye Chekwube, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, had directed the Command’s Complaint Response Unit to investigate the incident.
The Command condemned the conduct captured in the video, describing it as unacceptable and inconsistent with the discipline and integrity expected of law enforcement personnel.
It urged the affected motorist to report to the Complaint Response Unit and provide relevant information to assist the investigation.
The police said appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against those found culpable at the conclusion of the investigation.
The Command stressed that no traffic violation justified extortion, harassment or abuse of office, warning officers and other security personnel to discharge their duties in accordance with the law.
It also urged members of the public to report cases of police misconduct through appropriate channels, assuring residents that allegations of misconduct would be treated seriously.
The statement was signed by DSP Henry Okoye Chekwube, Police Public Relations Officer, Imo State Command, Owerri, and dated October 9, 2026.
