Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué has been banned from all official football activities for two months and handed a six-match suspension after being found guilty of threatening match officials in Spain’s second division.
The disciplinary action follows an incident after FC Andorra’s 1–0 defeat to Albacete Balompié in the La Liga 2 last week.
According to the Spanish Football Federation, Piqué was sanctioned for “minor violence against referees,” although no physical contact was recorded. Match referee Alonso De Ena Wolf reported that the former Spain international verbally insulted and threatened officials after the final whistle.
Piqué was quoted as telling the officiating team: “You’d better leave with an escort so that nothing happens to you. In another country, you’d be finished, but here in Andorra we are a civilised country.”
The federation said the punishment was imposed due to “obvious and public acts that undermine the dignity and decency of the sport.” FC Andorra sporting director Jaume Nogues also received a similar sanction for allegedly making offensive remarks.
However, the club has strongly rejected the referee’s account, insisting parts of the report are inaccurate. FC Andorra said the recorded statements “do not accurately reflect the sequence of events or the comments made during discussions” and has demanded corrections as well as an official transcript of the incident.
The club is also considering legal action to defend its reputation.
Piqué, who acquired FC Andorra in 2018 through a holding company and later became its president, has overseen the club’s rise to Spain’s second division since 2025. The team currently sits 10th on the table with four matches left in the season.
