The Richard Akinnola Foundation has provided financial support totalling N3.8 million to 38 widows of journalists and activists across Nigeria.
The initiative was announced by the foundation’s founder, Richard Akinnola, during an event held in Ikeja to mark the organisation’s 16th anniversary. The gathering took place at Airport Hotel Ikeja and also featured the renewal of annual health insurance coverage for the beneficiaries.
Akinnola explained that widows who could not attend the ceremony physically would receive their support through bank transfers, ensuring that all beneficiaries were reached.
He noted that the anniversary celebration is one of the foundation’s two flagship programmes, adding that the organisation quietly provides ongoing assistance to widows, including help with rent, school fees, and daily living expenses.
According to him, in 2025, the foundation also distributed blood pressure monitoring devices to all beneficiaries as part of efforts to promote their health and wellbeing.
Akinnola expressed gratitude to supporters who have contributed to the foundation’s work over the past 16 years but emphasised the need for more financial backing from individuals and corporate organisations.
“Giving is not about the size of one’s wealth, but the depth of compassion. It is not the rich who give, but those who truly care,” he said.
Founded on April 10, 2010, the organisation focuses on supporting widows and children of journalists and activists, acknowledging the risks associated with their professions.
